Indonesia: A Booming Market for Online Shopping

In Indonesia, online retail is blossoming. Despite having low rankings of internet and ecommerce penetration rates, a report from Research and Markets showcased that Indonesia’s online retail market has been the biggest in the region due to its hefty population. Factors that have furthered ecommerce development are increased internet penetration and mobile connectivity, as well as favourable demographics and economic growth. Meanwhile CNBC earlier this year said that with a population of more than 250 million and rapidly growing internet adoption, the Indonesian archipelago could offer a booming market for online shopping; and current projections say it will reach $130 billion by 2020.

Indonesia has the potential to become the largest of the fast growing B2C ecommerce markets in Southeast Asia, according to a report by yStats.com. The report also highlights Indonesia as a “mobile first” country. Mobile phones were used by the majority of internet users in Indonesia to access the web in 2014, and were furthermore the device most used by online shoppers to make purchases online. Smartphone penetration is growing, expected to top 100 million users and rank Indonesia among the top five countries worldwide by number of smartphone users, within the next three years. Additionally, clothing and other fashion-related items were the most purchased online product category last year, while the payment method most preferred by online shoppers was bank transfer.

In addition, to provide guidelines for Indonesia’s digital economy sector, President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo has recently signed the ecommerce road map for Indonesia, issued at the end of 2017. It will help regulate technology and address related issues such as logistics, cyber securities, taxation, human resources development and consumer protection.

To learn more about these trends and meet the stakeholders in online retailing, the InternetRetailing Expo (IRX) Indonesia is gearing up to return with its 3rd edition, to be held from 24-25 January next year at the Pullman Jakarta Central Park, which will once again become the meeting place for marketplaces, brands, multichannel retailers and online retailers to meet their key suppliers and learn through peer knowledge sharing and best practice implementation case studies.

In 2018, IRX Indonesia is expected to attract more than 2,000 attendees to an even more diverse exhibition with plenty of value-packed on-floor sessions and 80-plus leading solution providers in the areas of digital infrastructure and innovation, digital payments, last mile fulfilment and many others. More than 100 speakers from multichannel and ecommerce retailers will be sharing knowledge and experiences during conference sessions and workshops at IRX Indonesia 2018. All these appear under the themes of retail, F&B, mobile, fintech, payment, cyber security, fashion, video content creation and marketing, and many others. Two new tracks will be featured in next year’s IRX Indonesia, Food & Beverage and Fashion & Beauty, which are identified as the most lucrative industries within today’s Indonesian economy.

“Indonesia is poised to have significant growth and become a leader in online retailing, as the trend-leading show. This is the reason we run IRX in Jakarta, Indonesia, next year being our third event, to help retailers looking to establish, along their journey to grow their online retail strategies,” said Julia Kwan, Portfolio Director, Asia, Clarion Events Pte Ltd. “IRX is the leading multichannel event in the retail calendar and takes place every March at the NEC Birmingham, United Kingdom. The UK is the most sophisticated internet retailing market globally. With over 200 exhibitors and 5,000 attendees to the show, IRX welcomes retailers and technology providers from across the multichannel landscape. Our hope is to connect these IRX events across the globe and bring the expertise gained from those events to various parts of Asia.”

Attendees to the event can expect industry tracks featuring a distinguished speaker panel of local and international industry who’s who, including, among others: Hari Sungkari, Deputy Chairman of Infrastructure, Indonesian Creative Economy Agency (BEKRAF); Muhammad Neil El Himam , Director of ICT Infrastructure, Indonesian Creative Economy Agency (BEKRAF); Jeffrey Paine, Founding Partner, Golden Gate Ventures; S Ravi Kumar, Director of eCommerce, PT.
