Thailand is on the move to become ASEAN’s digital infrastructure hub by 2020. According to a Frost & Sullivan report, Thailand’s Internet of Things (IoT) spending in 2014 amounted to US$57.7 million, and it is forecasted to increase by 1,600 percent by 2020. Most of IoT spending takes place in the manufacturing and logistics sectors. The Government’s determination to drive digital growth is expressed in the multiple IoT initiatives, including smart city plans in Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok.

On the smart city front, the ICT ministry in Thailand has developed a digital economy masterplan which entails two phases:

  • Main domain missions: hard infrastructure, soft infrastructure, service infrastructure, digital economy promotion and a digital society.
  • Pilot projects centred on ecommerce, e-education, e-industry, and e-government.

To manifest these projects, the country is actively searching for partners to collaborate with, representing massive opportunities for IoT solution providers.

To further boost the country’s competitiveness, Thailand is pushing its Smart Thailand project, which according to Anudith Nakornthap, Thailand’s ICT minister, will further empower local stakeholders in different business sectors. Thailand recently announced a broadband plan which aims to increase its reach from 33 percent to 80 percent of the population in the next three years, reaching 95 percent in 2020.

IoT Thailand is held annually in Bangkok. With a focus on local telecommunication companies and enterprises in key verticals, the event offers Southeast Asia’s most comprehensive programme for solution providers targeting enterprise adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technologies in Thailand. With more than 1,800 attendees participating in the Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Bangkok and Hanoi editions in 2016, the event will return for the fourth year in a row to Bangkok.
