An ambitious construction project that offers something a little different to the Singaporean middle and working class, SkyVille@Dawson has completed the first phase of development, allowing residents to receive the keys to their units.
Touted to be completed by the third quarter of 2015, the project aims to provide flexible layouts based on column-free, beam-free apartment spaces, maximising the space and making allowance for diverse family sizes with various lifestyles.
Dawson's remaking plans included new ideas such as the “Housing-in-the-Park” concept. Award-winning local architects were appointed to translate their ideas into the design proposals.
“Each home is designed to be part of a Sky Village, comprising 80 homes that share a naturally ventilated community terrace and garden. Every tower is composed of four vertically-stacked Sky Villages across three interconnected blocks with a total of 12 villages and 960 homes,” says WOHA, the architects behind the build.
Awarded Platinum, Singapore’s highest sustainable rating, the project adopts passive design strategies and maximises construction technologies for precast components. In total, the project features over 1.5 hectares of public gardens and achieves a 100 percent green plot ratio.
Given that approximately 80 percent of Singaporeans live in public housing and choose to buy rather than rent their units, SkyVille@Dawson provides high quality apartments for under a half the price of the average market-rate for similar units.
“It's about creating a conducive family living environment because some of the new flats in SkyVille have very flexible layouts. A young couple may need to have bigger rooms when the children comes they can partition their flats to have more bedrooms for the children,” said Dr Cheong Koon Hean, CEO of Housing & Development Board (HDB).
HDB said it will implement concepts and ideas learnt from the Dawson projects in other towns such as the upcoming Bidadari, Punggol Northshore and Tampines North.
