Typhoon Haiyan death toll rises over 5

Two weeks after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines, the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has announced that 5,209 people are now known to have lost their lives in the storm, with many more missing, and around 23,000 people injured.

It means the typhoon is now officially the deadliest natural disaster in the country’s history.

Haiyan, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, was one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded with winds of up to 270km/h hitting the central Philippines when it made landfall on 8 November.

It flattened homes, schools and an airport in Tacloban and neighbouring Samar Island was also badly affected.

Humanitarian efforts are continuing.
