Thousands feared dead following Philippines typhoon

Up to 10,000 are estimated to have died in the Philippines from super typhoon Haiyan, which reportedly destroyed around three-quarters of the area of the country’s Leyte province.

The typhoon, one of the strongest storms ever recorded, flattened homes, schools and an airport in Tacloban, the capital of the province.

Neighbouring Samar island was also badly affected.

Relief efforts are well underway but officials have admitted they are struggling to distribute aid.

Looting is also widespread.

“There is looting in the malls and large supermarkets,” said Tacloban city administrator Tecson John Lim. “We don’t have enough manpower. We have 2,000 employees but only about 100 are reporting for work. Everyone is attending to their families.”

Typhoon Haiyan has now made landfall in Vietnam, but has been reduced to a Category One storm.
